Puerto Chico
in Playa Blanca / Lanzarote

The gateway to Fuerteventura

Playa Blanca is located south-west of the Los Ajaches mountains, to the east on the edge of the Montana Roja volcano. To the north lies Yaiza, the municipality to which Playa Blanca belongs.
Playa Blanca has 2 ports:

  • Marian Rubicon, the best marina on the island with a shopping mile, a large market twice a week and many restaurants and bars.
  • Puerto de Playa Blanca is the ferry port from where several ferries cross to Fuerteventura many times a day. This is the only place in Lanzarote where you can do this. The fishermen and some private boats and yachts also moor here. The port has been generously expanded and will eventually accommodate smaller cruise ships.
  • You can walk around Playa Blanca from the southernmost point of the island, the Faro de Punta Pechuguera lighthouse, to the famous Papagayos beaches in the north of Playa Blanca along a beautiful 8.5 km long promenade.
  • Montana Roja means red mountain. It rises 194 m from the sea and became extinct around 2 million years ago. Many people hike up this mountain every day.
  • The town of Playa Blanca has a flair, it is lively but not overcrowded. All the houses are painted white, like in the rest of Lanzarote, and the flair of the former fishing village is reflected. There are countless restaurants and small shops on the promenade, and there is a long pedestrian zone above.

Beaches

  • The Papagayo beaches are probably the most famous golden sandy beaches on Lanzarote. They can be reached on foot in around 800m from the easternmost hotel, or you can drive through the nature reserve for €3 and turn off at the following beaches from west to east:

  1. Punta Mujeres is 450 m wide, a few smaller sandy bays can be reached by climbing. Nudism is permitted on the southern side.
  2. Playa del Pozo is 340 m wide. It is very quiet and secluded, and nudism is also practiced here in some places.
  3. Playa de la Cera is only 100 m wide, but from here you can walk to the restaurant. There is also a large car park here, so it is very easy to reach.
  4. Playa de Papagayo is the area's namesake. This is the dream beach like in a picture book. It is also easy to reach, just like the previous beach.
  5. Playa Caleta de Congrio is the longest beach at almost 500 m. It is very quiet and if you need space, you are in good hands here. You can also get there quickly from the car park.
  6. The last beach, whose name I don't know, is below the campsite. It is also very quiet and you can relax here.

weitere Strände im Ort

  • Below the Flamingo Hotel, 300 m as the crow flies from Puerto Chico, the golden sand beach is safely protected from the waves. There are a few restaurants and stalls on the promenade.
  • The town beach of Playa Blanca is directly below the roundabout. Since the promenade leads here, you can see the sandy beach for "seeing and being seen".
  • Dorada Beach is the largest sandy beach and the only one with sun loungers and umbrellas for hire. All of this and the restaurant are managed by our friend with a partner.
  • Playa de Las Coloradas is located to the east of the town, it has black sand and dogs are allowed between 7-10 a.m. and 7-9 p.m.

Food and drinks

Most of the restaurants and bars are on the promenade from the port to the north, as well as in the pedestrian zone and the main street (Av. de Papagayo) leading to the Plaza Senora del Carmen. The restaurants we highlight (our personal opinion)

Playa Blanca

  • Villa Kamezi -  9 and 12 course menus of the upper class in indescribable offerings, for us the number 1, close to the lighthouse ******
  • Casa Carlos - best ambience, great food, countless staff at the Marina Rubicon *****
  • Avenida 55 - the best Italian pizza in town at Plaza de Sr. d. Carmen ****
  • Tipico Espanol - delicious steaks and tapas, very cheap, below Avenida 55 ***
  • Mumbai Marsala, - Indian cuisine at the end of the harbor Marina Rubicon ****
  • Flor de Sal im Faro-Park, fine cuisine, best fish and a great chef *****
  • Isla Bonita, - we have so much fun here and eat great, the employees are funny and very nice ***
  • Asiatico - a very good Asian restaurant with delicious food and very nice staff ***
  • Camel west of the two previously mentioned, with delicious steaks and good staff ****

Yaiza und Uga, even if you have to drive about 15-16 km, it is worth eating here

  • At La Bodega de Santiago you are under a gigantic rubber tree. Very fine food, pre-ordering is a must, from the center of Yaiza towards the Fire Mountains on the left side *****
  • Bodega Uga is also part of the Michelin-starred cuisine, please make a reservation!, is located between Yaiza and the camel roundabout above Uga on the LZ2. The German Chancellor Helmut Kohl has already dined here with King Juan Carlos. *****

Femés

small and inconspicuous, but extremely friendly service and great local food. What's special: You have a fantastic view of Playa Blanca and the southwest. ***

El Golfo

There are many small and large restaurants here, all of which are good. You are right by the sea with the foaming waves, some of which are 5-8 m high.

Bars

There are several bars all around the city. Most are on the promenade like Yum Yum near the harbor.

Particularly worth mentioning are a few in the Papagayo Center, which is located 100 m east of the church and above Dorada Beach.

  • Rosco´s Beer House is in the middle of the pedestrian zone and has almost all types of beer in stock. A great meeting place.
  • Barney´s Bar, here the boss plays live with friends every day. On Saturdays there is a full band. A must!
  • Almost at the entrance is the Waikiki Bar, which is frequented by young people.
  • Many more are here because they can make noise and not disturb anyone in the town.
